Palas de Rei at present
It is located in the Southeast of the Province of Lugo. Palas de Rei borders the municipality of Friol to the North, Antas de Ulla to the South, the Province of Coruña to the East and, the municipalities of Monterroso and GuntÃn to the West.
It has a 199.6 km² surface, this territory is divided in 43 parishes and, it has 3,824 inhabitants, which implies a population density of 19.1 inhabitants/km².
From the beginning of the century, the population has suffered a certain drop. The average age is 54 years old, which shows a mature population. People between 18 and 60 years old represent the 60% of the total amount of population.
Palas de Rei is located in the Ulloa Region, in the middle of Galicia, is crossed by two roads: N 547 and LU 231. The last one connects Palas with Friol, Monterroso and Taboada, however the most important is the N 547 which connects Lugo with Santiago de Compostela.
Ulloa is a region with an agricultural and livestock tradition. The farming industry is the basis of its economy, thus, the most part of the working population does it for a living. The milk is its main source of production; therefore the cheese and the meat are the most important products. The Arzúa-Ulloa cheese is one of the most traditional of Galicia. The farmers of this region knew how to transmit, generation to generation, the technique and the good deeds of the cheese made of their own cow’s milk. A fair is dedicated to this product since 1993, ‘Cheese fair of the Ulloa Region’, which is held alternately in Antas de Ulla, Monterroso and Palas de Rei.
Nowadays, the primary sector employs the 64.78% of the active workers, dedicated mainly to the dairy production. The secondary sector (5.12%) is in relation with some sawmills, an extractive industry and some electrical assemblies. The tertiary sector is located in the centre of the village where there are the administrative, educational, health, commercial and transport services. Most of them were brought up next to the St. James Way.
This municipality is a place of geological contrast; it’s worth mentioning the mountain range ‘Serra do Careón’, as well as the River Ulla and its main affluent, the River Pambre. Due to the huge distance from the sea it has a continental weather; the winter is cold and the summer warm.
