Castle of Pambre
It is the best example of Galician medieval military architecture. It was built by Gonzalo Ozores de Ulloa around 1375 on a sheer rock, on the River Pambre bank, which acts as a natural protection.
The castle has a rectangular floor plan surrounded by an irregular floor plan wall, adapted to the ground. The walls are made of masonry and granite ashlars. The central building is formed by the Tower of Homage that has a square floor plan, and it is surrounded by four smaller square towers, all of them connected by a wall.
In the middle of the castle it is the main tower with a square floor plan, it has 11 meters sideways and three floors. The first floor is blind; the second one is 5 meters elevated from the ground and, there are remains that allow us imagine an inner bridge linking this floor with the wall. This would be connected through a door with a pointed arch and an Ulloa’s coat of arms. On the third floor there is a large window with lancets arches. All the towers are crenellated in eaves with pointed or triangle-shaped battlements.
There is a large trabeated door to access to the inner courtyard. The wall is around 2 to 2.5 meter-thick and even 5 meter-thick where the door is situated. This door has the Ulloa’s coat of arms in the arch stone. On the right of the door there is the chapel of St. Peter which was built at the end of the 12th century.
The Castle of Pambre is a myth in relation with the Irmadiño wars against the aristocracy; these wars were captured by the writer López Ferreiro in his novel ‘The Castle of Pambre’.
Church of Vilar de Donas
It is one of the best examples of the Galician Romanesque in the French Way. It dates back to the 13th century, and it was declared Historic and Artistic Monument in 1931. It was part of a monastery founded around the middle of the 12th century.
It is worth mentioning the mural paintings, since they are considered the most important ones discovered in Galicia.
